Golfer Jason Day and Blowing up balloons for Back Pain

Golfer Jason Day and Blowing up balloons for Back Pain

There are plenty of things you can learn from golfers when it comes to lower backs. And blowing up balloons is one of them!

A golfer puts a ridiculous amount of force through their backs. This stress can cause tightness, stiffness and pain.

Professional golfer Jason Day has recently said he blows up balloons everyday to help him with his back pain.

So why a balloon for back pain?

A lot of back pain and stiffness is caused by the brains inability to ‘switch off’ our backs no matter how much stretching we do.

If we don’t get our ribs moving, then it is impossible for our brains to switch off our backs. If you have been struggling with back pain and stiffness for a while then this is something you need to look into.

A balloon is a great tool to force all of our air out, and therefore get our ribs moving during the full exhale.

There are a few specific points to focus on, so we will be posting a video of how to do this at the start of next week.

Below is the interview by Jason Day during the Masters.

One of the things Day has been doing to keep himself healthy and playing golf is, you guessed, blowing up balloons. Wait, what?

"I have to get my ribcage back in position (each morning) by blowing into a balloon. I think blowing into a balloon is pretty funny," Day said.

“It sounds like you’ve let one go, right?” Day said. “Every 30 seconds, I would be letting the balloons out, and these guys are looking at me very strange. But they understood what’s going on.”

Day would much rather do something that looks silly in public than take a big risk and go under the knife. He's trying to prolong surgery as long as possible.

"I want to stay away from that as much as possible,” he said. “Once you cut yourself, you can’t undo what you’ve done in there. I want to stay away from that.”
